Nutrition Center of Excellence

Nutrition Center of Excellence

Ensuring that food is a vehicle for wellness is the vision of the FDA’s Human Foods Program (HFP).  It is our mission to protect and promote the health and wellness of people through science-based approaches to prevent foodborne illness, reduce diet-related chronic disease and ensure chemicals in food are safe.

The Nutrition Center of Excellence supports this mission by elevating and empowering action on nutrition science, policy, and initiatives to help reduce the burden of diet-related chronic diseases, improve health equity, and ensure the nutritional adequacy and safety of infant formula and other critical foods.

The Center of Excellence prioritizes the agency’s ongoing efforts to help US consumers make more informed food choices and encouraging industry to offer more nutritious food products. Along with advancing and elevating the FDA’s robust nutrition agenda, a key characteristic of the Center of Excellence will include expanding collaborations – inside and outside the federal government – to help achieve shared goals.

The Center of Excellence comprises:

  • Office of Nutrition and Food Labeling
  • Office of Critical Foods which manages the regulation of infant formula and medical foods

What We Do

  • Directs major FDA initiatives, policies, and strategies related to nutrition and food labeling, and critical foods.
  • Provide analysis, planning and direction on nutrition and food labeling initiatives and critical foods (infant formula and medical foods) for the HFP.
  • Develop policy, regulations, guidance, and similar documents for matters within the scope of the responsibility of the Center of Excellence.
  • Collaborate on scientific research with federal and other data partners and supports the development and maintenance of data systems to assist and inform direction, planning and management of activities and initiatives relevant to the Center of Excellence and the HFP.
  • Coordinate the FDA’s engagement in both domestic and international efforts in nutrition and food labeling and critical foods; and fosters increased collaboration and partnership with a variety of stakeholders.
