2026 Recalls of Food Products Associated with Fresh Jalapeños from Sinaloa, Mexico and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors due to the Potential Risk of Salmonella

The FDA and CDC, in collaboration with state and local partners, are investigating illnesses in a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Javiana infections linked to jalapeño peppers from Sinaloa, Mexico, and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors to distributors, restaurants, and food service companies, including Mexican-style restaurants in the U.S.

On July 22, 2026, Coast Citrus Distributors initiated a limited recall of jalapeño peppers packaged in bulk generic Coast Tropical packaging. On August 5, 2026, Coast Citrus Distributors agreed to recall remaining jalapeños imported from Sinaloa, Mexico and implicated in the outbreak through epidemiological and traceback data. 

FDA is working with downstream firms to determine if additional recalls are necessary. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) also issued a public health alert for meat and poultry products containing FDA-regulated jalapeños that may be contaminated with Salmonella.
