Scientific Working Group Program

To support the mission of the Office of the Chief Scientist (OCS) and advance regulatory science, the Office of Regulatory and Emerging Science (ORES) manages the FDA Scientific Working Groups (SWG) Program, an agency-wide collaborative effort to:

  • Promote communication and dissemination of scientific information across FDA centers and offices
  • Coordinate educational activities, training, and scientific projects
  • Exchange scientific expertise and resources
  • Identify scientific and regulatory challenges.

SWG’s are comprised of scientists across the FDA to promote cross-cutting scientific coordination and collaboration. SWG topical areas address a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines reflecting some of the Focus Areas of Regulatory Science (FARS). To further promote external outreach, the SWG program established a formal pathway for FDA to collaborate with other federal agencies and stakeholders to present FDA’s views and thoughts on scientific and regulatory issues on emerging sciences and technologies.
