FDA Antimicrobial Stewardship in Animals: Stakeholder Resources

Stakeholder communication and education related to antimicrobial resistance and stewardship is a priority for CVM. CVM has compiled available resources such as frequently asked questions, fact sheets, brochures, and videos to help interested stakeholders access information related to antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial stewardship.

FDA has an important role in ensuring the use of antimicrobial drugs to treat animals are in line with antimicrobial stewardship principles. The concept of “antimicrobial stewardship” encompasses several important principles of judicious use that are critical to slowing the rate at which bacteria develop resistance to antimicrobial drugs. Medically important antimicrobial drugs should only be used when necessary to treat, control, or prevent disease. In addition, when such use is necessary, these antimicrobials should be used in an optimal manner under the oversight of a licensed veterinarian.
