National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS)

On this Page:

What Is NYTS?

The National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) is an annual school-based survey that gathers information about tobacco use from students in grades 6 through 12 across the U.S. It includes a set of core questions about students’ tobacco-related behaviors, attitudes toward tobacco, and exposure to both pro- and anti-tobacco messages. The survey uses a sampling method designed to ensure results are nationally representative. The data are adjusted to account for students who don’t respond and are weighted to reflect national trends accurately.

NYTS was first conducted in 1999 and continued sporadically between 1999 and 2011. From 2012-2024, the FDA and CDC collaborated on the survey to collect data annually and for analysis and dissemination of findings. In 2025, the survey transferred to FDA.

What Are the Goals of NYTS?

FDA is committed to a science-based approach that addresses public health issues associated with tobacco use. NYTS was designed to provide national data on long-term, intermediate, and short-term indicators key to the design, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive tobacco prevention and control programs.

How Are NYTS Data Used?

NYTS data are used to produce official national estimates of youth tobacco use. The data are used by FDA to inform regulatory actions. The data can be accessed and used by anyone, provided they follow the guidelines below.

FDA expects that users of the NYTS dataset will adhere to the following standards for the analysis and reporting of research data. All research results should be presented or published in a manner that protects the confidentiality of participants. NYTS data will not be presented or published in any way in which an individual or school can be identified. Therefore, users will:

  • Not attempt to link nor permit others to link the data with individually identified records in another database.
  • Not attempt to learn the identity of any person or school included in the data and not deliberately combine these data with other FDA or non-FDA data for the purpose of matching records to identify individuals or schools. If you should inadvertently discover the identity of any person or school, you will ensure the identity of any person or school is kept confidential and not used in any publications or presentations.
  • Not imply or state, either in written or oral form, that interpretations based on analysis of the data reflect official FDA policies or positions.
  • Understand that sub-national analyses are not appropriate for this national sample and will not be conducted.

By using these data, you signify your understanding of and agree to the above-stated terms.

Data is available in SAS® format. PDFs of the questionnaire, codebook, and methodology report are also available.
