NCTR Animal Facilities and Services

NCTR’s Animal Care and Use Program has maintained full accreditation by AAALAC (Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International) since 1977 ensuring the highest quality of care for laboratory animals.

Campus animal housing accommodations include:

  • Conventional housing for rodents and swine
  • Specific pathogen-free rodent production colony
  • Isolators for germ-free rodents
  • Quarantine facilities for all species
  • Nonhuman-primate research center
  • Zebrafish production facility
  • Four equipment processing units

Services include:

  • Animal care provided by AALAS (American Association for Laboratory Animal Science)-certified technicians
  • Veterinary care (board-certified)
  • Technical procedures performed by a highly experienced, trained, and educated animal-care staff
  • Animal care and use program oversight by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
  • Review of all protocols and monitoring of animal use by IACUC to ensure compliance with all animal-welfare laws and regulations
  • Day-to-day administration of the animal care and use program by the Institutional Attending Veterinarian
  • Training in animal-welfare laws, regulations, and institutional policies; biology of laboratory animals; proper, humane use of animals in research; etc.
