Biography

Dr. Ryan McDonald is a staff fellow in the Division of Emergent Technologies in the Office of Applied Science. He joined the FDA in 2021 after briefly working in industry as a senior research and development microbiologist. He received a PhD in microbiology from the University of Maryland Baltimore County where he conducted research characterizing the microbial communities of diverse natural and man-made habitats.

Investigating the efficacy of shotgun metagenomics as a routine monitoring method for food-borne pathogens and antimicrobial resistance genes and animal food.
Evaluating the efficacy of novel pathogen mitigants in animal feed.
