FDA Shares New Report by Reagan-Udall Foundation on Establishing Public-Private Partnership to Collect and Analyze Antimicrobial Use Data from Food-Producing Animals

Registration Now Open for Public Forum Presenting Report Findings

May 23, 2022

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine is announcing the availability of a report drafted by the Reagan-Udall Foundation (the Foundation) for the Food and Drug Administration entitled, Exploring the Potential for A Public-Private Partnership to Support the Tracking and Monitoring of Antimicrobial Use in Food-Producing Animals. This report summarizes key findings from a series of targeted conversations with stakeholders from animal agriculture, veterinary, public health organizations, and other key representatives about the feasibility of establishing a voluntary public-private partnership to collect and analyze antimicrobial use data from food-producing animals. The Foundation conducted this outreach and drafted the report under a cooperative agreement with the FDA.

To share insights from the report and to allow for questions from the public, the Foundation will host a virtual public forum on June 14, 2022, from 1:00pm to 3:00pm (EDT).

To register for this event, please see: Reagan Udall Foundation – Event Registration Page.

The FDA has also opened a docket to accept public comments through August 22, 2022, on the findings summarized in the report and general insights that could help inform the development of a framework for a public-private partnership to collect antimicrobial-use data in food-producing animals. To electronically submit comments to the docket, visit www.regulations.gov and type FDA-2022-N-0824 in the search box. To submit comments to the docket by mail, use the following address. Be sure to include docket number FDA-2022-N-0824 on each page of your written comments.

The FDA hopes that continued dialogue with affected stakeholders will help the agency in exploring practical and effective ways to collect data about the use of antimicrobials in food-producing animals, including through possible public-private partnerships. The collection and analysis of these data is valuable for guiding the implementation of on-farm antimicrobial stewardship plans and informing future strategies to curb the development of antimicrobial resistance.
