FDA Approves Generic Nitenpyram Tablets to Treat Flea Infestations in Dogs and Cats

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved Nitenpyram Tablets (nitenpyram) for the treatment of flea infestations on dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens that weigh at least two pounds and are at least four weeks old. This is the first generic approval of nitenpyram tablets for dogs and cats.
Nitenpyram Tablets contain the same active ingredient (nitenpyram) as the approved brand-name drug product, Capstar, which was approved for the treatment of flea infestations in 2000. The FDA determined that Nitenpyram Tablets are bioequivalent to the brand-name product.
Nitenpyram works by interfering with fleas’ nervous systems, causing paralysis and death of the fleas within a few hours.
Nitenpyram Tablets are available over the counter and come in two tablet sizes: 11.4 and 57 mg. Dosage is based on a dog’s or cat’s weight. Do not administer Nitenpyram Tablets to dogs or cats less than two pounds.
