CAPT Nazmul Hassan, Acting Assistant Commissioner for Import Operations
Captain Nazmul Hassan is a distinguished Commissioned Corps Officer in the U.S. Public Health Service, currently serving as the Senior Executive and Acting Assistant Commissioner for Import Operation. In this capacity, he leads the Office of Import Operations (OIO) and oversees the FDA’s import operations, which includes five field regional divisions, covering the Northern Border, West Coast, Southwest Border, Southeast and Northeast regions.
The FDA’s import operation programs are responsible for 353 ports of entry across the U.S. and its territories, in addition to multiple modes of transportation including truck, air, mail, and sea cargo ships. CAPT Hassan collaborates with the FDA’s federal partner government agencies to ensure safe and quality FDA-regulated products enter the U.S. market through our robust, targeted surveillance platforms.
With a career at the FDA spanning over two decades, CAPT Hassan has built an exceptional track record of leadership. Since joining the FDA in 2002 at the FDA New York office, he held a variety of leadership roles, including Senior advisor to FDA Chief Technology Officer, Director of IT Transformation, Program Division Director, Director of the Investigations Branch, Chemistry Branch Director, Supervisory Investigator, Compliance Officer, and Investigator. This extensive experience has given him a deep, ground-level understanding of the agency's operational, technological, and regulatory functions.
CAPT Hassan has received numerous accolades for exemplary service, including two Presidential Unit Citations for the COVID-19 and Ebola responses. His distinguished career is further marked by multiple PHS Outstanding Service Medals, Achievement Medals, Commendation Medals for his contributions to the FDA and PHS missions. His commitment to global health is evidenced by a PHS Global Health Campaign Medal and a Foreign Duty Award for public health mission with U.S. Navy in Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and the Marshall Islands.
CAPT Hassan holds a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Bioengineering from Stony Brook University, a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering from New York University, and a Master of Science in Health Science from Touro University.
