Health Informatics at FDA

As the data within and outside FDA grows at an ever accelerating pace, health informatics is increasingly essential to FDA’s capacity to protect and promote the public health.

Health informatics at FDA combines the disciplines of information science, computer science, medicine, data science, and management science.  It enables FDA to acquire, store, retrieve, and use the enormous data sets it receives every day from manufacturers, health care providers, scientists, and others to evaluate and enable access to the life-sustaining and life-saving products it regulates.

Harnessing and using health informatics helps FDA in every facet of its regulatory work by enhancing and capturing the Agency’s knowledge and promoting transparency and data-sharing.
