Stephen Ostroff, M.D. is the FDA’s new Deputy Commissioner for Foods and Veterinary Medicine (FVM). Dr. Ostroff’s career has been dedicated to public health. He served as acting FDA commissioner from April 2015 until Congress confirmed Dr. Robert Califf’s appointment in late February 2016. Prior to his tenure as acting commissioner, he was the agency’s chief scientist, responsible for leading and coordinating FDA’s cross-cutting scientific and public health efforts.
In this interview, Dr. Ostroff shares his thoughts on the goals, priorities and challenges ahead for the FVM program.
