Food Ingredient Chemistry Reference Documents

The purity specifications for manufacture of food ingredients and methods for detecting these ingredients in food can be found in the following documents.

  • Methods incorporated by reference in the food additive regulations for determining compliance with listed specifications are available from the Office of Food Additive Safety.
  • Specification monographs from the Food Chemicals Codex are incorporated by reference in many of the food additive regulations. The most recent edition (6th) was published in 2008 and may be purchased from: The United States Pharmacopeia, 12601 Twinbrook Pkwy, Rockville, MD 20852; 1-800-227-8772 or 1-301–881–0666; (Internet) www.usp.org.

FDA has developed several chemistry guidance documents for industry to assist with submissions for food ingredients and packaging.
