Early Work of the Bureau of Chemistry Drug Lab

This article discusses the leadership of Dr. Lyman Kebler, first Director of the Drug Division of the Bureau of Chemistry, and how that division organized to carry out its mission of enforcing the 1906 Food and Drugs Act during the initial years of that important law.  Included is an explanation of the functions and staffing of the four laboratories within the division:  the Drug Inspection Laboratory, the Synthetic Products Laboratory, the Essential Oils Laboratory, and the Pharmacological Laboratory.  In addition to the division’s contributions to the interests of the Bureau of Chemistry, the article also mentions outside entities with which the division worked, including the Post Office Department, the Bureau of Fisheries in the Department of Commerce and Labor, and several other bureaus within the Department of Agriculture.
