Public Meeting in Mexico City, Mexico, for Industry, Consumer Groups and Other Interested Stakeholders on Final Rules for the United States (U.S.) Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)

On April 28, 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Latin America Office coordinated a public informational session with the National Service for Agroalimentary Public Health, Safety and Quality (SENASICA) and the Federal Commission for the Protection from Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS) on the U.S. Food Safety and Modernization Act (FSMA) in Mexico City, Mexico.

The purpose of this public meeting was to present the key elements of five FSMA final rules to industry, academia and other interested stakeholders to address questions about the scope and implementation of the final rules, with emphasis on what foreign suppliers, producers, manufacturers, packers, holders, and U.S. importers must do to comply.

At this meeting, Michael Taylor, Deputy Commissioner for Foods and Veterinary Medicine, FDA, and other senior officials provided an overview and update on the implementation of the FSMA final rules.

These sessions included a question and answer period, as well as a panel discussion.

The following topics were addressed:

  • Status Update of FSMA Implementation
  • Current Good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Human Food and Animal Food (Preventive Controls Rules)
  • Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption (Produce Safety Rule)
  • Foreign Supplier Verification Program for Importers of Food for Humans and Animals
  • Accredited Third-Party Certification Program
  • FSMA International Engagement and Communication

The meeting was held at the:
Fiesta Americana Reforma Hotel -
Avenidad Paseo de la Reforma 80 Col. Juárez
Mexico City, Mexico

In addition, on April 27 FDA held two bilateral meetings with Mexican Food Safety Authorities, SENASICA and COFEPRIS, to converse on FSMA implementation efforts and the Produce Safety Partnership established in 2014 among the three agencies. The meetings were coordinated by the FDA-Latin America Office and hosted by SENASICA and COFEPRIS at their main offices in Mexico City, respectively.
