FDA Releases Plan for Supporting Antimicrobial Stewardship in Veterinary Settings for FY 2024-2028

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) released, “Supporting Antimicrobial Stewardship in Veterinary Settings, Goals for Fiscal Years 2024-2028.” This five-year plan builds upon the progress of the previous plan for FY 2019-2023.

The five-year plans are intended to provide stakeholders with a transparent roadmap of the actions that correspond to FDA’s three main veterinary stewardship goals:

Align antimicrobial drug product use with the principles of antimicrobial stewardship
Foster stewardship of antimicrobials in veterinary settings
Enhance monitoring of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and antimicrobial drug use in animals

The new plan kicks off October 1, 2023, and advances many of the key activities initiated during the previous plan (2019-2023). For continuity, the new five-year plan begins in Phase 3 and is organized under the same overarching goals and objectives and continues the numbering format from the previous plan.

FDA plans to complete the actions outlined in Phase 3 by the end of FY 2026 and Phase 4 by the end of FY 2028. Some of these actions are embedded into FDA's programmatic work in areas such as education, outreach, international harmonization, compliance activities, and others. As FDA develops and implements strategies to address individual actions in the plan, it will solicit public feedback on certain key initiatives.
