FDA to Participate in National Institutes of Health 2023 Pain in Animals Workshop

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is announcing its upcoming participation in the 2023 Pain in Animals Workshop to be held on September 26-27, 2023, in Bethesda, Maryland. The workshop is hosted by the National Institutes of Health to promote animal welfare and management of pain in animals and people. 

This free workshop is intended to help facilitate the discovery and approval of safe and effective non-opioid pain therapies and other analgesics for both people and animals. The ability to accurately measure pain in animals is a critical step in being able to develop these types of therapies for pain management. In addition, effective management of pain ensures patient comfort and can help promote healing.

The 2023 workshop will focus on highlighting potential new ways to measure the experience of pain in animals and people and explore the use of innovative study design and analytical methods to establish whether treatment effects are both statistically significant and clinically meaningful.

The workshop aims to bring together stakeholders from across the globe, including academia, government, and industry experts, who are working together to better understand, measure, and manage pain in animals. FDA staff will present at the conference on statistical considerations when using multiple or composite endpoints and on adaptive and other innovative pain measurement study designs.
