Michele Mital currently serves as the Deputy Director of the Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) within the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In this position, Ms. Mital is responsible for assuring that CTP accomplishes its public health goals and for operationalizing the Center’s vision and mission as it implements the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. Ms. Mital works closely with the Center Director and CTP senior leadership and with key FDA and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) leadership and external stakeholders on matters that affect Center goals, policies, programs, and strategic initiatives.
Since August 2013, Ms. Mital has served as CTP’s Associate Director for Program Coordination. As a member of the Center Director’s Senior Leadership Team, Ms. Mital provides strategic advice and counsel on programmatic and management matters.
Ms. Mital is a graduate of the University of Maryland at College Park and has more than 25 years of experience working at FDA. She began her career as a policy analyst in FDA’s Office of Tobacco Programs where she led a team of analysts who were responsible for working with state and territorial government officials to enforce FDA’s 1996 tobacco regulation.
Following enactment of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act in 2009, Ms. Mital returned to tobacco regulation and played an instrumental role in establishing CTP. She served as CTP’s Acting Associate Director for Policy where she helped with all aspects of standing up the Center, including staffing the Center and implementing the new law.
Ms. Mital possesses broad FDA experience, working in the Office of Legislation (OL) within the Office of the Commissioner for nearly twelve years, including serving as the Senior Advisor and Deputy for more than six years and the Acting Associate Commissioner for Legislation in 2012-2013. As an adviser to multiple FDA Commissioners and Agency senior staff, Ms. Mital provided strategic guidance concerning legislative needs, pending legislation, and oversight activities that affect FDA. During her tenure in OL, she helped advance many of the Agency’s legislative priorities, including the Food and Drug Administration Amendments Act of 2007, the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act, the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act, and the Animal Drug and Animal Generic Drug User Fee Reauthorization Act of 2013.
