Science informs the decisions that the FDA makes every day about a wide range of products from foods to complex medical devices to life-saving drugs. On September 18, 2015, the FDA held its fourth Science Writers Symposium, a special event intended to engage and inform science and health journalists about how the FDA is applying scientific approaches to critical public health issues.

The free, all-day event at the FDA's White Oak campus featured lab tours and scientific presentations on timely, research-based topics. Sessions included the science of patient input on medical product development; how advances in simulation and modeling are helping speed treatments to patients; and how agency researchers are working to understand and prevent the mysterious reemergence of diseases such as mumps and pertussis (whooping cough). Lab tours featured research on Ebola and stem cells and showcased the computer technology we’ve developed to support the demands of Next Generation Sequencing.

Attendees discussed the agency’s activities with staff from various FDA Centers and Offices, and featured speakers included Acting FDA Commissioner Stephen Ostroff, M.D., and Acting Chief Scientist, Luciana Borio, M.D.
