Patricia Y. Talbert, PhD, MPH, MS, is an associate professor and the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Administration at Howard University’s College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. In 2021, Howard University received funding from the FDA Office of Minority Health and Health Equity (OMHHE) for a project titled, “Hispanic, black and pacific islandeR perspectives on COVID-19 oUtreach Strategies and patient centered outcomes (HeAR US).” Dr. Talbert serves as one of the site principal investigators for this project in a collaborative effort with seven other site locations.

Effective communication strategies are key to improving vaccination rates and reducing health disparities due to COVID-19, particularly in communities that are hard to reach. The HeAR US study intends to understand the perspectives, preferences, and unmet needs of underrepresented Black, Hispanic, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (NHPI) communities across the U.S. regarding COVID-19 outreach. The project aims to inform existing communications and guide the development of culturally tailored COVID-19 communications and implementation strategies.
