Eugene Abad, Management Analyst, Office of Inspections and Investigations

Eugene Abad, Management Analyst

Q1: How did your career begin at FDA?

Eugene Abad: I started my career with the FDA as a Consumer Safety Technician in 2010. This position allowed me to understand the important work that our Investigators do to support the FDA's mission to the public. I am now part of the Talent Acquisition that supports the Office of Inspections and Investigations.

Q2: What do you value most about working at FDA?

EA: I value the diversity and work culture that the FDA provides to its employees. I've held different positions since joining the FDA in 2010. I've had the privilege of working with different teams and supervisors throughout the years and I've enjoyed them all. I also value the benefits and flexibility of our agency.

Q3: What are you most proud of in terms of your work at FDA?

EA: I am overall proud of the experiences I've had throughout the years that allows me to better understand the needs of the agency to fulfill the FDA's mission. My years as a Consumer Safety Technician gave me knowledge of what Investigators do in the field when they conduct inspections. Now that I am working in the Talent Acquisition Branch 3, part of my job is Recruitment, Outreach and Onboarding. My knowledge of the field work that the Office of Inspections and Investigations does allows me to present a clear picture of the work that our employees do when I am out doing recruitment and outreach events.

Q4: What advice would you give to an FDA job seeker?

EA: Be open minded when applying for positions within the FDA. Prior to the FDA, I served in the U.S. Navy for 8 years, with a specialization in Logistics. I never pictured myself working for the FDA after getting out of the military. Working for the FDA gives you many opportunities to work in different areas of our agency. There are positions and details that are available for internal employees which allows you to take different routes in your career if you so choose.

Q5: When you're not at work, what is your favorite way to unwind?

EA: I enjoy racing my motorcycle on the local tracks here in Washington state during the summer months. Another hobby that I enjoy is training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I've also managed to have my son do it too. It's a great way to build confidence, self-defense and being calm under pressure.
