As a practicing anesthesiologist since 1987 I feel that propofol sould be administered only by those physicians experienced in the provision of general anesthesia services, ie the ability to maintain and secure an airway in emergent situatiions. It is a falicy that upper endoscopy and colonoscopy can be performed under conscious sedation techniques, and in my experience, these patients receive general anesthesia with an unprotected airway, and not conscious sedation. The public would be better served by keeping this very potent and dangerous drug in the hands of experienced anesthesia providers.,
