Issue Areas/Comments
I would like to make a personal comment regarding how I feel about the drug companies' advertisements of the use of psychiatrict drugs. I feel they, of course, have the right to advertise, but not to promote untruths. From the reading that I have done into these drugs, there doesn't seem to be any scientific proof that they handle "chemical imbalances" or that these supposed imbalances are the cause of the mental illness. In fact, they do no better than the placebos in studies and have many dangerous side effects (like suicide - I guess that'd handle your depression quick!) These ads that are shown on TV and in magazines are encouraging the consumer to diagnose themselves and ask their doctors for these drugs. I feel this is very irresponsible promotion, and if the drug companies want to advertise their horrible products, they need to be honest and upfront about it.
