This cannot be allowed to happen as this most certainly asserts to undermine consumer knowledge and allows for ice cream manufacturers to dupe an otherwise unwitting public. It has been the assumed course that the FDA would force manufacturers into full disclosure of product contents. At what point do we stop this practice? Does ground "Beef" become ground "Meat" containing goat, horse or squirrel meat without disclosure to the public? Would you feel confident feeding this to your family? You, an agency of the federal government, have an obligation to the citizens of the United States of America as it is OUR tax dollars that fund your Administration, to maintain honesty, integrity and SAFETY in the food and drug industry. The approval and passage of this petition defies at least two of those commitments, and I posit possibly the third. Whereas it may cetainly be a cost-effective strategy for manufacturers it enters into the realm of a slippery slope that will ultimately lead to reduced standards and a lack of disclosure throughout the processed foods industry. It is for these, and other, reasons that I urge you to deny the petition described in Docket 2003P-0132. Thank you.
