One concern I have is that the use of clones as breeding stock will further reduce the genetic diversity of cattle stocks. This could make animal stocks more susceptible to a pandemic. I draw an analogy to the potato blight of the 1800s that decimated the food supply of Ireland. One theory is that the use of a single strain of potato allowed the blight to spread freely. A more relevant example might be the spread of small pox through Native Americans. One theory is that viruses spread more rapidly between related individuals and since the Native Americans were derived from a smaller founding population than Europeans, they were more susceptible. My recommendation would be to limit the percentage of any herd that is derived from the same clone. This should slow the spread of disease.
