| As a consumer I am extremely concerned about your decision to permit the presence of cloned animals in the food supply. The long-term effects are still unknown and there have already been reports of ill effects on cloned animals. With your tough stance on BSE I am shocked that a reputable organization such as yours has made the decision to put Americans at risk. It leads me to the conclusion that this decision has been made based on economics and not health.
If this is not the case, and your priority is the health of Americans then I strongly encourage you to enforce labelling on foods that contain any portion of a cloned animal or their by-products. Consumers deserve the opportunity to make their own choice when it comes to cloned animals. Not only do Americans deserve that opportunity, they are entitled to that freedom; the freedom to make their own informed decisions because they live in a free country. The only way that this can happen is through mandatory labelling. If the industry and your agency have done their research, allowing consumer choice should not be an issue. I also encourage your agency to restrict the feeding of cloned animals and their by-products to other animals and of course to pregnant women since any effects on the fetus will not be known for some time.
Please consider the long term effects of this decision on both the food supply and consumer trust in your agency and the food industry. Make labelling mandatory!! Thank you for taking the time to read these comments.
