Issue Areas/Comments
As a consumer, I oppose the use of non-ambulatory (downed) cattle in animal feed. The FDA has catered to the meat industry and recently announced that it plans to allow most parts of the carcasses of downed and dead animals to be rendered for animal feed. In my opinion, this is just a ploy by the meat industry to make more profits. This change in industry standards is unhealthy for the cattle who are not carnivores, unhealthy for the people who eat the cattle (infectious disease transmission). It removes the incentive for farmers to take better care of their animals and causes more pain and suffering for the downed animal. Please have compassion for the animals and concern for consumer health by not allowing downed animals to be used for animal feed and make sure they are humanely euthanized. Thank you.
