Comments for FDA General
1. General Comments Hi my name is Tim Ver Hage, I am a dairy farmer in Michigan. I have been developing a herd of top registered Holsteins over the past several years. We have bovine genetics that are sought by European farmers. We market over 100 embryos per year to the E.U. Since we are a small family farm, we rely on this for a major portion of our income. Our milking herd size is 60 cows. We have never fed meat and bone meal nor do we feed blood meal to our cattle. With vegetable protein sources being so inexpensive I have never seen a need to feed my cattle these products. I always had the feeling that I didn't want my cows to be fed something, that could have died from a transmitable illness. I would like to see blood meal banned from being fed to our cattle to protect us from the possibility of TSE's or BSE. We don't need to feed this product and I don't think it is worth the risk. Most of all from my view point, the closing of the border between the U.S. and Europe for trade of bovine embryos is a major financial burden. I feel since I have never fed these products it is very unfair. There are a lot of registered breeders in the U.S. that in total will lose millions of dollars from this new ruling by the E.U. One question I have is why semen can still be shipped from the the E.U. and from the E.U. to the U.S. without fear of this desease and yet embryos from the U.S. can't be sent to the European Union. I would think embryos would pose no risk the same as semen, of transmitting TSE's or BSE.I would ask that you would look into this issue very thoroughly. My business depends on the opening of the borders between the United States and Europe. I thank you very much for your time.
