The FDA and CDC, in collaboration with state and local partners, are investigating illnesses in a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Bovismorbificans infections linked to broccoli sprouts and microgreens grown from a contaminated seed lot. This outbreak is currently being investigated separately from the shiga toxin-producing E. coli and Salmonella outbreak linked to alfalfa sprouts.

As part of this investigation, FDA collected and analyzed a sample of seeds from the seed supplier identified in the investigation. The seed sample tested positive and whole genome sequencing (WGS) analysis showed that it matched the same Salmonella Bovismorbificans strain that made people sick in this outbreak. As a result, the seed supplier conducted a recall of the implicated seed lot and contacted their customers.

On October 2, 2026, EAK Distribution of Casper, WY, recalled Home Grown green sprouting broccoli seeds after they were notified of the recall of seed lot #W4105 by the seed supplier and the link to this outbreak.

On October 7, 2026, Eden Brothers LLC, of Arden, NC, recalled calabrese broccoli seeds in packets and in 1-oz and 1-lb. sizes (Eden Brothers lots 1022067 and 1022068; supplier lot W4105) after they were notified by their seed supplier that lot #W4105 may be contaminated with Salmonella.

Consumers, restaurants, and retailers should not use recalled seeds.

FDA is continuing to work with the supply chain. This advisory will be updated if additional downstream recalls are initiated.

Previous Updates

September 24, 2026

The FDA and CDC, in collaboration with state and local partners, are investigating illnesses in a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Bovismorbificans infections linked to recalled broccoli sprouts grown by Evergreen Fresh Sprouts, LLC of Moyie Springs, ID. This outbreak is currently being investigated separately from the shiga toxin-producing E. coli and Salmonella outbreak linked to alfalfa sprouts.

Based on epidemiological information collected by CDC and state partners, a total of 32 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella have been reported from six states. Illnesses started on dates ranging from July 7, 2026, to September 3, 2026. Of the 27 people interviewed, 26 (96%) reported eating sprouts or microgreens. Twenty-two reported specifically eating broccoli sprouts, and one reported eating a microgreen mix containing broccoli microgreens. There have been three hospitalizations and no deaths.

As part of this investigation, officials in Washington State collected and tested samples of Evergreen Fresh Sprouts-brand broccoli sprouts collected from a local grocery store and a sick person’s home. Both sprout samples tested positive and whole genome sequencing (WGS) analysis conducted by state partners and FDA showed they matched the same Salmonella Bovismorbificans strain that made people sick in this outbreak. This product was included in the recall and is no longer available for sale.

FDA is continuing its investigation to determine the source of contamination and if other products of concern may be on the market. This advisory will be updated with information as it becomes available.

This outbreak is currently being investigated separately from the shiga toxin-producing E. coli and Salmonella outbreak linked to alfalfa sprouts also being investigated by FDA, CDC, and state partners.

Based on epidemiological information collected by CDC and state partners, a total of 22 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella have been reported from four states. Illnesses started on dates ranging from July 7, 2026, to August 26, 2026. Of the 19 people interviewed, all 19 (100%) reported eating sprouts and 17 (89%) reported specifically eating broccoli sprouts. There have been two hospitalizations and no deaths.

FDA’s and state partners’ traceback investigations have identified Evergreen Fresh Sprouts, LLC as the common grower of broccoli sprouts that were eaten by patients before becoming ill. On September 4, 2026, Evergreen Fresh Sprouts, LLC initiated a recall of broccoli sprouts based on a positive Salmonella result from a broccoli sprouts sample collected and analyzed by Montana state officials. According to whole genome sequencing analysis conducted by state partners and reviewed by FDA, the positive sample is the same strain of Salmonella that is causing illnesses in this outbreak. Consumers, restaurants, and retailers should not eat, sell, or serve recalled broccoli sprouts grown by Evergreen Fresh Sprouts, LLC with expiration dates of 9/7, 9/9, 9/11, 9/14, and 9/16.

FDA’s investigation is ongoing, and this advisory will be updated as more information becomes available.
