Prior Notice System Interface (PNSI) Product Code Builder Tutorial

This tutorial is available to you for assistance in building valid FDA product codes.

The Prior Notice System Interface contains a Product Code Builder module to guide you through an easy, user friendly selection process that will help you locate and build a product code for the food article you are importing into the United States. Using information you enter, the application will display valid choices for each of the five components of the product code (Industry, Class, Subclass, PIC, and Product).

To help you use the Product Code Builder in PNSI, FDA has an online Product Code Tutorial. This tutorial is designed to give users the information they need to successfully code products regulated by the FDA. You can go through the tutorial in order, or jump right to a lesson that will meet an immediate need for information.

PLEASE NOTE that FDA regulates many products in addition to foods and this tutorial is used to help users code any of these products. Since the Product Code module you will be using in PNSI has been modified to contain only the product codes appropriate for use with Foods, Sections 3 (The Structure of the FDA Product Code) and the first part of Section 4 (Food and Food-related Products) will be of most use to you.
