Talking to Patients About Using the Nutrition Facts Label to Make Healthy Food Choices
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration in collaboration with the American Medical Association (AMA) has developed an education program to help physicians and other healthcare professionals understand the Nutrition Facts label and counsel adult patients about using the label to make informed food choices that support healthy dietary practices and can help reduce the risk of developing some health conditions. The program includes four videos and companion patient education materials.
Interested physicians can earn 1 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM on the AMA Ed HubTM.

This video reviews the regulation of the Nutrition Facts label and three key sections of the label: servings, calories, and percent Daily Value.
Module 2: Nutrient Overview and Nutrients to Get More Of
This video provides an overview of the nutrients listed on the Nutrition Facts label and discusses the nutrients that patients may want to get more of in their diets: dietary fiber, calcium, vitamin D, potassium, and iron.
Module 3: Nutrients to Get Less Of
This video discusses the nutrients that patients may want to get less of in their diets: saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars.
Module 4: What is the Nutrition Facts label and how do I use it?
This video provides a general overview of the four key sections of the Nutrition Facts label. It is designed to help physicians and other healthcare professionals counsel patients on using the label to make informed dietary choices and is suitable to be shown directly to patients.
