The FDA Office of Women's Health (OWH) newsletter highlights women's health news and initiatives, meetings, regulatory safety information, and other updates from FDA. OWH sends this newsletter monthly via email to subscribers. We also occasionally send Women’s Health Alerts with timely news updates to this list.

Previous editions

  • November 2024: Learn more about Orlynvah, recently approved by FDA for the treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections. This month we highlight our diabetes resources and health resources for women living in rural communities. We also encourage you to view our Caring for Others resources to help you manage your loved one’s medical needs while also taking care of yourself.
  • October 2024: Learn more about FDA OWH's updated Women's Health Research Roadmap, the roadmap reflects current and future women's health needs, priorities and regulatory research questions. October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an important reminder of the importance of screening and early detection. Mammograms can help save lives and continues to be the best primary tool to screen for breast cancer.  
  • September 2024: Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is the most common inherited blood disorder and affects approximately 100,000 Americans. While SCD affects both men and women, women living with SCD often face additional health challenges due to unique factors such as menstruation and pregnancy. This edition of the newsletter also highlights National Women’s Health and Fitness Day (September 25) promoting the importance of health awareness and fitness for all women.
  • August 2024: FDA granted marketing authorization to NOWDiagnostics for the First To Know Syphilis Test. This is the first at-home, over-the-counter test to detect Treponema pallidum (syphilis) antibodies in human blood. Results of the test alone should not be used to start, stop, or change any treatments. This edition of the newsletter also highlights National Breastfeeding Month and shares relevant resources and news highlight for women. 
  • July 2024: This edition of the OWH newsletter highlights Uterine Fibroid Awareness Month, National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month and the latest women’s health highlights. 
  • June 2024: FDA issued a draft guidance, “Diversity Action Plans to Improve Enrollment of Participants from Underrepresented Populations in Clinical Studies,” intended to increase clinical study enrollment of participants of historically underrepresented populations to help improve the data the agency receives about the patients who may potentially use the medical product. This edition of the newsletter also highlights National HIV Testing Day, Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, and shares the latest women’s health highlights from the FDA. 
  • May 2024: Join OWH in recognizing National Women’s Health Week. This annual observance serves as an important reminder for women to prioritize their health needs. FDA OWH’s theme is “Know Your Bones.” Learn more about Bone Health and our NWHW activities in this edition of the newsletter, and register to attend OWH's free virtual public webinar titled: Osteoporosis: A perspective for 2024 presented by Marcella Donovan Walker, MD, MS. Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center on May 16 at 12 PM ET. 
  • April 2024: This month, we highlight Black Maternal Health Week. Did you know Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy related cause than White women? Learn more about OWH's maternal health efforts. This edition of the newsletter also spotlights our latest Knowledge and News on Women's Health blog post which focuses on Sexual Transmission Awareness Week. 
  • March 2024: In this edition of the newsletter OWH Celebrates Women's History Month and highlights National Women & Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, and National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. 
  • February 2024: Learn more about hyperemesis gravidarum and join OWH in celebrating International Day of Women and Girls in Science, and American Heart Month.
  • January 2024: Prioritize your health and wellness in the new year, and learn more about HPV during Cervical Health Awareness Month. 
  • December 2023: Review some of the activities OWH implemented and supported throughout 2023, and remember: it's not too late to get your flu vaccine.
