How did your career begin at FDA?
I wanted to bring my previous experience in scientific investigation, university teaching, and bench-top laboratory research to the FDA to contribute to the protection of public health and human environment. Those past experiences helped immensely when I started with FDA, as our Center was relatively new.
What do you value most about working at FDA?
I value the ability to identify an interest whether that be research, regulation, or public health issues and then progress towards becoming an expert in a particular topic or field. In addition, work-life balance and job security are both benefits of working for FDA.
What are you most proud of in terms of your work at FDA?
When I started with FDA, I was not aware that so many employees had the opportunity to conduct research, publish in scientific journals, and compose standards. Since then, I have had the opportunity to propose and oversee a multimillion-dollar research project and then author and publish scientific papers from that research. In addition, I have evaluated the potential Environmental effects for the Cigar Flavors Rule, which allowed me to be part of a historic accomplishment.
What advice would you give to an FDA job seeker?
FDA offers a vast array of scientific careers and interesting directions that could interest scientists in many different disciplines. My Center has numerous working groups, research projects, and topics that would be of interest to most scientists. At FDA, you have the opportunity to use your interests, experience, and knowledge to contribute to an important mission. In addition, FDA provides many opportunities to improve your skills and advance your professional career through training and work detail opportunities.
When you're not at work, what is your favorite way to unwind?
I enjoy spending time with my children and extended family along with live concerts, outdoor activities, art museums and travel.
