Office of Public Health Strategy and Analysis

Mission Statement

Provide analytical and strategic leadership on public health issues and the assess the impact of Agency activities upon the public health

Major Functions

  • Acts as Office of the Commissioner and Agency resource for quantitative research and analysis on emerging issues, including developing policy options and understanding the expected impact of those options on public health outcomes
  • Advances and informs work on priority public health and scientific initiatives and issues at the request of the FDA Commissioner or Deputy Commissioner for Policy, Planning, Legislation and Analysis
  • Leads Agency efforts on transparency, including potential public access to FDA information and greater transparency regarding FDA procedures
  • Develops and executes research to improve the agency’s ability to link agency activities and outputs to public health outcomes, and serves as an agency resource for methodology to link FDA activities to public health outcomes
  • Provides leadership on linking FDA work to Healthy People objectives, including the development of new objectives for areas that are within FDA’s responsibility
  • Prepares and presents research papers, briefings, lectures, training, and other communications as necessary to disseminate the results of the program’s work both within FDA and publicly
  • Works with the appropriate agency experts to provide strategic thinking and leadership with respect to management of GAO and OIG studies, and ensures that GAO and OIG engage with the appropriate agency experts and receive accurate and timely information in response to their requests
  • Provides study teams with strategic advice on how to articulate FDA’s message in response to GAO and OIG reports most effectively
  • Updates the status of the agency’s implementation of GAO/OIG recommendations
