Vacancy Announcement-Molecular Microbiologist (Staff Fellow)

Center for Veterinary Medicine

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Office of Research (OR), Division of Animal and Food Microbiology (DAFM) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Staff Fellow Molecular Microbiologist (postdoctoral research associate).  The primary mission of the Division is to conduct basic and applied research to support regulatory decision-making by the Center for Veterinary Medicine.  As a result, the research impacts policy and regulatory decision-making regarding issues affecting safety of the nation’s and the international food supply.

This postdoctoral research associate will work with principle investigators in DAFM to conduct research on human foodborne pathogens to support the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS) research program. This research is designed to identify and investigate phenomena related to the use of antibiotics in food producing animals during the pre-harvest and post-harvest periods of animal production. This work will address such problems as development and transmission of antibiotic resistance, and the impact of antimicrobials on antibacterial resistance in foodborne pathogens.

The selected participant will be trained to conduct molecular assays and genomic /bioinformatics analysis of bacteria collected as part of the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS). Specific responsibilities include microbiological and molecular tests to characterize bacterial resistance to antimicrobials; genomics and bioinformatics analysis to identify emerging and novel resistance genes and to study the function of the genes; sequence analysis of strains carrying mobile elements that carry the genes associated with antibacterial resistance; determining the role of linked plasmid genes (e.g., disinfectants, heavy metals) on selection and dissemination of MDR plasmids; and writing manuscripts and report research findings.

The candidate must have a PhD degree in microbiology and molecular biology with strong molecular biology and bioinformatics skills. Experience with DNA sequence, genome analysis, cloning, gene expression, and a bioinformatics tool is desirable. The position can be renewed up to three years dependent upon the incumbent’s performance and productivities, and funding availability.

This position is in Laurel, Maryland and is available immediately. The position is equivalent to the GS-11/12 level in the Microbiology (0403) series and the salary range is from $69,581 to $108,422 based on experience and education.

Further information regarding qualification requirements can be found at the following link:   https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-standards/0400/microbiology-series-0403/

**Applications will be reviewed and interviewed on a first come first serve basis.**
