The FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), Office of Vaccines Research and Review (OVRR), Division of Bacterial Parasitic and Allergenic Products (DBPAP) is recruiting to fill a Staff Fellow/Visiting Associate position to serve as a Scientific Reviewer in the Lab of Immunobiochemistry (LIB).

Members of DBPAP are actively engaged in a variety of areas including allergic diseases, bacterial pathogens, vaccines, and the microbiome. These investigators lead research teams in the fields of immunology, microbiology and gene therapy employing state-of-the-art techniques to address critical public health issues as part of the CBER mission. In recent work, we have developed mass spectrometry-based assays to measure the potency and product characteristics of German cockroach allergen extracts, mouse allergen extracts, and Alternaria alternata allergen extracts. Our work is well-funded and has appeared in peer-reviewed scientific journals!

DBPAP is located at the FDA’s White Oak campus in Silver Spring, Maryland and is part of the CBER research program, which includes more than 100 principal investigators. The newly built laboratory complex at White Oak includes core facilities, such as flow cytometry, confocal and electron microscopy.

RESPONSIBILITIES: As a Scientific Reviewer, the candidate will perform the following major duties:

  • Research on the characterization of complex, non-standardized allergen extracts, with the aim of standardization and/or improved characterization of products on the US market.
  • Participate in the regulatory review of licensed and experimental allergenic product and novel treatments modalities

QUALIFICATIONS

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:  Biological Sciences (0401): Degree in Biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, – OR – Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, or other relevant Biological Sciences, such as an equivalent doctoral degree (M.D., D.V.M., or Sc.D. etc.) is required. Candidates must possess strong collaborative skills, exceptional written and oral communication skills, and experience in scientific critique.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. SALARY: Salary is commensurate with education and experience, with an excellent benefits package.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This position will be filled through the Service Fellowship program. The appointment is for up to four years with opportunities for renewal. No previous Federal experience is required.
