Tobacco Products

Research

Research is critical for the success of FDA's Center for Tobacco Products (CTP), as we focus our efforts on reducing youth initiation of tobacco use, reducing tobacco product harms, and encouraging those who already use tobacco products to quit.

Research Priorities

CTP is interested in a variety of research areas that will expand the science base related to tobacco and health.

Research Partnerships

In addition to carrying out our own research, CTP conducts research to support regulatory activities through an interagency partnership with the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Within this partnership, CTP provides resources to fund grants responsive to FDA's regulatory authority. In addition to providing funds to support NIH grants, CTP funds research through contracts via NIH and supports intramural projects conducted by NIH scientists. The following are two examples of research programs currently under way through the NIH partnership:

  • The Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study:
The PATH Study will help scientists to monitor and assess the behavioral and adverse health impact of tobacco use by studying how and why people start using tobacco, switch products, quit using tobacco, and start using it again after they've tried to quit.
  • Tobacco Centers of Regulatory Science (TCORS):
TCORS is a first-of-its-kind program designed to generate research to inform the regulation of tobacco products to protect public health. The program, which was initially funded in 2013 and will run for up to 5 years, consists of 14 multidisciplinary centers located across the United States. Taken together, the TCORS sites will increase knowledge across the full spectrum of basic and applied research on tobacco and addiction. The program also provides young investigators with training opportunities to ensure the development of the next generation of tobacco regulatory scientists.

In addition to the NIH partnership, CTP partners with FDA's National Center for Toxicological Research, as well as with other governmental agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
