National Medical Evidence Generation Collaborative (EvGen Collaborative)

Every day, patients, healthcare professionals, administrators, policy makers and families are called upon to make decisions about their health and healthcare. Ideally, these choices are made based on high-quality evidence about what diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic approaches and products are best suited for each individual’s condition and preferences. In the case of health systems and population health, high quality evidence is needed about overall effects on populations and subgroups who may have different outcomes. In many cases, unfortunately, the evidence to support these decisions may be lacking in quality—or it simply may not be available at all.

Thanks to ongoing scientific and technological advances, this is about to change. Electronic health records, insurance claims databases, registries that collect data about diseases and the therapies used to treat them, personal electronic devices, and social media are now being harnessed to serve as rich sources of information. Additionally, health systems are integrating into larger units with common operating procedures. These changes open up new avenues for learning and research that can accelerate improvements in patient care and public health.

With appropriate safeguards and measures in place to ensure quality of both the operations and data, these resources have the potential to deliver the kinds of high-quality evidence needed to enable all healthcare stakeholders to make truly informed decisions.

The National Medical Evidence Generation Collaborative (EvGen Collaborative) is working to make this vision a reality. By fostering collaboration, coordinating efforts, and sharing insights across the spectrum of stakeholders, EvGen is designed to contribute to a dynamic learning healthcare system where research is embedded in everyday medical practice and all stakeholders—doctors, researchers, industry, government, patients, and families—can contribute to building the medical evidence needed to benefit all.
