Jeppi Nut and Candy Company Is Voluntarily Recalling Natural Pistachios in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware And Virginia Because Of A Possible Health Risk

Ted Pavlos, President

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- April 17, 2009 -- Jeppi Nut and Candy Company, in Timonium, Maryland is voluntarily recalling Setton Farm’s Natural Pistachios due to potential contamination with the Salmonella organism, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weekend immune systems.  Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.  In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The Natural Piastachios were distributed in Maryland in Jeppi’s retail store and through mail orders.  The product was sold in one pound brown bags labeled Jeppi’s Natural Pistachios. We ask that all customers return Natural Pistachios purchased in brown bags if they were purchased BEFORE March 30, 2009.  Product was also sold by the bulk case, in cardboard boxes marked Setton Farms Naturally Opened California Pistachios Roasted And Salted with lot numbers: 3578B13XLA-3, 0548D05XLA-3, 0548D05XLA-3. Bulk product was also repacked and sold in 8 oz cello bags with the lot number: R03030901 with an expiration date of 11-16-09 and 2.5 oz cello and black bags with the lot number: R03030901 with an expiration date of 11-04-09.

No illnesses have been reported to date to Jeppi Nut and Candy Company in connection with this problem.  Jeppi nut is recalling the product out of an abundance of caution.

Consumers who have purchased Natural Pistachios matching the information above, are urged to return them to Jeppi Nut Company for a full refund.  Consumers with questions may contact the company at 410-252-7069, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
