Barnard Nut Company Recall of Pistachio Products Because of Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- April 8, 2009 -- Barnard Nut Company of Miami, FL is recalling Pistachio nut products, because the pistachios may be part of the recall by Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc. due to contamination with the Salmonella organism.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Pistachio nut product that were distributed in Florida to re-distributors, and subsequently sold it via direct store delivery to retail stores also in Florida.

The products in question are 5 to 8 inch tall and 3 to 5½ inch wide polypropylene plastic bags of Salted and Unsalted Pistachios, with UPC numbers and brand names as follows:

00029 10112 Nuts About Florida Pistachios Salted, 8oz, regardless of lot number, and expiring on or prior to October 15, 2009
66297 10702 La Botana de Don Pepe Pistachio Salado, 3.5oz, regardless of lot number, and expiring on or prior to October 15, 2009

No illnesses have been reported to date to Barnard Nut Company.

This recall was as the result of a mandatory recall issued by Setton Farms of Terra Bella, CA due to the possibility of contamination of some of their products with the bacteria. The company has ceased the production and distribution of the product as FDA and the company continue their investigation as to what caused the problem.

Consumers who have purchased Barnard Nut Company brand products such as Nuts About Florida Pistachios or La Botana de Don Pepe Pistachios with expiration dates on or prior to October 15, 2009 are urged to discontinue usage and return product to place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 305-836-9999 from 8am to 5pm, eastern time Monday to Thursday, and 8am to 12 noon Fridays.
