Grand Rapids Popcorn Recalls PCA's 30# Cases of Medium Chop Granulated Peanuts Sold in Michigan and Florida Because of Possible Health Risk

Ed Yeo

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- February 3, 2009 -- Grand Rapids Popcorn, Comstock Park, Michigan is voluntarily recalling 30 pound cases of Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) brand Medium Chopped Granulated Peanuts because they have the potential to be contaminated withSalmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected withSalmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection withSalmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) brand Medium Chopped Granulated Peanuts were sold in the original PCA packaging by Grand Rapids Popcorn from January 2007 through August 2008 to customers of our retail store and to wholesale customers in Michigan and Florida.  The recalled products are:

PCA medium chopped granulated peanut sold in cases of 30 pound vacuum sealed boxes.  The lots affected by this recall include any lots numbers starting with a 7, 8 or 9.  There is no UPC code on the product.

Grand Rapids Popcorn Roasted Granulated Peanuts, net wt. 48 oz. and sold in poly bags.  There are no lot numbers on this product, which was sold from January 2007 through August 2008 in our retail store in Michigan.

Grand Rapids Popcorn was notified by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) of the expanded recall of their product produced at their Blakely, Georgia facility.  Grand Rapids Popcorn has not distributed any of the recalled product since August 2008, and we have no product under this recall in stock at this time.

If you have purchased from the above mentioned lots, or during the referenced time period, please contact Grand Rapids Popcorn at 1-800-968-4027 (M-F, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST) so that we may retrieve any product identified by this recall.
