Delphina’s Bakery Recalls Peanut Butter Bar and Hippie Cookie Because of Possible Health Risk

The Neighborhood Baking Co., d.b.a. Delphina's Bakery
(503) 221-1829

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- March 4, 2009 -- The Neighborhood Baking Co., d.b.a. Delphina's Bakery of Portland, OR is recalling all Peanut Butter Bars and Hippie Cookies, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The Peanut Butter Bar and Hippie Cookie were manufactured using peanut products recalled by Peanut Corporation of American because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The Peanut Butter Bar and Hippie Cookie were distributed in Oregon and Washington through direct delivery to coffee shops, delis, farmers markets, and in the Delphina's Bakery's retail Café and Bakery outlet on NE. 42nd Avenue, Portland, OR.

The products were distributed during the period January 1, 2007 through February 27, 2009, are not labeled and do not have a lot code or UPC code:

  • The Peanut Butter Bars were distributed wholesale in unlabeled cellophane-wrapped boxes and then re-sold individually to customers directly from pastry and display cases.
  • The Hippie Cookies were distributed wholesale in either unwrapped cellophane boxes or loose in a variety box with other pastries and re-sold individually to customers.

On February 28, 2009, the Peanut Butter Bar was discontinued.

After February 27, any future Hippie Cookies will not contain the recalled peanuts. All new cellophane–wrapped boxes of Hippie Cookies from February 28 forward will be marked with the code, "1234" on the top of the box so that the customer will be able to identify and differentiate between the previously contaminated product and the new product.

Customers who have purchased either one of these products before February 28 are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Delphina's Bakery directly at 503-221-1829 Monday through Friday from 8AM to 4PM Pacific Standard Time.
