Fullei Fresh Recalls Alfalfa Because of Possible Health Risk

Manny Wong

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Miami, FL -- August 18, 2006 -- Fullei Fresh of Miami, Florida, is expanding the recall of its Fullei Fresh brand of 5-ounce containers, and 5-lb bulk cartons of alfalfa sprouts, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more serious illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditic and arthritis.

The recalled alfalfa sprouts were distributed statewide in food service establishments. The product comes in a 5-ounce, clear plastic cup container and 5-lb. bulk cartons. This product was grown and packaged by Fullei Fresh, and distributed by produce companies.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The potential for this contamination was noted after random testing by the company revealed the presence of Salmonella in one (1) 5-ounce cup of alfalfa finished product. Distribution of this product has been suspended while the company continues its investigation as to the source of this finding.

Consumers who have purchased 5-ounce containers and 5-lb bulk cartons of alfalfa sprouts in the month of July and up to August 18, 2006 are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-877-4-FULLEI.
