"We’re committed to helping the food industry meet the new requirements of the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act. We know that some small businesses have limited resources and may need additional support to meet FSMA’s obligations,” said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D. “Our new Food Safety Plan Builder is a software tool that will help food manufacturers create a food safety plan for their facilities that outlines steps they’re taking to prevent foodborne contamination and ultimately protect public health. It should reduce the costs of complying with the law’s requirements, while providing additional support to help small businesses understand and meet those provisions."

To help businesses meet the requirements of the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Final Rule for Preventive Controls for Human Food, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is releasing a new software tool to help owners and operators of food facilities create a food safety plan specific to their facilities. The Food Safety Plan Builder is a free software application that businesses can download from the FDA’s website to guide them, step-by-step, through the creation of a food safety plan. The development of a food safety plan is one requirement of the new law. While the software tool was primarily developed with small businesses in mind, it can be used by manufacturers of any size.

To assist users, the FDA has also developed an overview video about the application, as well as individual videos that demonstrate how to navigate the program. These videos are posted on YouTube and may be accessed via the Food Safety Plan Builder webpage. A User Guide is also available. Manufacturers with questions about how to use the tool can access further assistance by contacting the FDA through the email address FoodSafetyPlanBuilder@fda.hhs.gov.
