An Opioid Primer: Legislative, Policy, & Practice Implications
November 16, 2017, 12pm-1pm EST

Learn how the opioid epidemic evolved and the interrelated legislative, policy, and practice implications in trying to address the dilemma.

Deaths from drug overdose have increased by 200% over the last 15 years and drug overdose has become the leading cause of injury death in the United States. Because registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice RNs (APRNs) work in a variety of direct-care, care-coordination, leadership, and executive roles, they are often in a key position to help patients understand the risks and benefits of pain treatment options and can play a key role in the prevention of opioid overuse and dependence. The crisis did not evolve overnight; the reasons for the epidemic are varied and complicated, reflecting several institutional barriers, and finding solutions will be equally challenging.

Following this webinar, nurses will be able to:

  1. Identify early and later opioid effects on the brain and illustrate how the brain changes over time with opioid use.
  2. Identify the IOM’s four level barriers to effective pain management and list 2 examples of each level barrier.
  3. Define the Prescription Drug Management Program and its role in state and national drug monitoring efforts.
  4. Describe current drug treatment options and list three barriers to medication assisted treatment programs.

This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the Maryland Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
