OTAT’s mission is to protect and enhance the health of the public through the evaluation of clinical studies and scientific data in support of investigational new drug and marketing applications of biological products. Our Medical Officers are responsible for the review of clinical trial protocols and plans for clinical development of cell therapies, gene therapies, and therapeutic vaccines for the treatment of a wide range of diseases and conditions affecting children and adults. They represent the FDA at meetings with academic and industry sponsors of clinical research, and in interactions with other regulatory and scientific agencies and organizations. They also have an important role in the approval process for biologic products by virtue of their extensive knowledge of clinical trial design and evaluation of results from a broad multidisciplinary background which allows for critical assessment of the rationale, safety, and adequacy of study design and interpretation of results. The specific duties and grade level of each Medical Officer position may vary depending on the selecting Office.

Must be a U.S. citizen with Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. The degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Official transcripts will be required prior to appointment.

A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (external link), a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.

For all grade levels and positions, applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Candidates must also possess 5 years of graduate-level training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training.

SALARY: Salary may be equivalent to GS-602-14 or GS-0602-15, plus physician market pay (Title 38), and is commensurate with education/experience. Team lead or supervisory positions may be filled through this advertisement, and a Peer Review package may be required depending on the position. Commissioned Corps pay structure may also apply. Additional selections may be made within the same geographical area FDA-wide.
