Description: Since 1999, FDA has provided nearly $1.5 miillion dollars to State and local agencies through the Innovative Food Safety Grants. While developed at the grass roots level, each grant can assist our nation in promoting a safer food supply. This broadcast will feature results of the Innovative Food Safety Grants from FY 1999 and 2000, and is primarily geared toward enhancing food safety in the retail setting. The American food supply is among the safest in the world, but there are still advances to be made in reducing preventable foodborne illnesses and deaths. Million of Americans are stricken by foodborne illness each year, with some 5,000 deaths annually. Regulatory action by itself cannot accomplish active managerial control of our nations food preparation and processing. Food safety education plays a vital role in changing behavior to improve the food safety practices of our nations food workers and managers. Participating in this satellite program will be a giant step towards accomplishing that goal. Who Should Watch:
