| It is essential for families to monitor depression treatment and make sure antidepressants and talk therapy are working. In response to the 2004 FDA advisory on antidepressants, Families for Depression Awareness developed and tested the attached Depression Wellness Guide with families across the country. The guide helps families understand depression, treatment, and how to monitor treatment with a 3-step monitoring approach.
Most participants used the guide every day or once or twice a week. Overall, they rated the guide very high (in the top two rankings). It was most helpful in understanding and monitoring treatment and how to talk with their clinician and family. Most found it helpful in taking their medications more regularly and seeing their clinician more regularly. One interesting finding is that two participants discovered they had bipolar disorder or an anxiety disorder after reading the guide. Both ended up receiving the right treatment after using the guide. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
