Dental Products Panel, I cannot come to Washington so I sent this e-mail. Numerous studies have shown that mercury from amalgam fillings is toxic. This information has been known for many, many years. Had I known that mercury was being put in my teeth, and in my case, under my teeth too, I would have never let it happen. I have been sick for over 20 years. I have amalgam tattoos in my gums. No one can see such a thing and not know it should not have happened. It is foolish to say that mercury put in teeth is safe, but when removed it must be handled as toxic material. Also, a little mercury in a lake would require closing it to the public. Mercury cannot be safe in the mouth, either. Just as with pantopaque, our government has quietly turned an eye and let many, many innocent people have their health and lives destroyed. What a shame. At the least folks should be given informed consent before any foreign material is put in their body anywhere. I never got it, and I have paid the price. Thanks. Gary L. Herring 702 E.
