| I am concerned about the potential for incorporation of UDIs into implantable medical devices via RFID. Consumer privacy is at risk when an implanted device is broadcasting identifying data about an individual. Unauthorized monitoring of implanted medical device UDIs could, in effect, publish a person's medical history. Via a link to meta-data, much more information about a person might be compromised, once that person can be identified (without knowledge or consent) via the device's UDI. Such action would constitute an illegal search and an obvious invastion of privacy. I would hope that the FDA would require medical device manufacturers to forward-think their devices' potential to reveal consumer- specific data and use all available measures to mitigate that risk via encyption or other masking of the data.
